When your communications setup involves two radio paths, the push-to-talk adapter deserves the same attention as the headset and radios. You need the correct connections, accessible controls and a clear understanding of how incoming audio reaches the headset.
The 3M PELTOR FL7000 series is designed for dual communications using a multi-channel radio or two single-channel radios. Its standard two-button arrangement provides separate transmit controls, with configuration depending on the adapter model and connected equipment.[1]

Dual communications: two radios or one multi-channel radio
Start by identifying how your team needs to communicate. Is the user carrying two separate radios, or using a radio that provides the required communication paths through one accessory interface?
3M describes two supported approaches within the series: two single-channel radios or one multi-channel radio. Two separate PTT buttons let the user select the intended transmit path.[1] Match the adapter to the actual radio configuration rather than choosing solely by the number of channels shown in a radio's menu.
For a two-radio purchase, list both radio models and the required cables. For a single-radio setup, specify the exact model and requested path operation. Ask for confirmation covering the headset, adapter, radio interface and any detachable cable as one assembly.
Before deployment, evaluate a sample with your radio team. Check each transmit control separately and have a receiving operator confirm the destination. Record which control serves each path and incorporate that mapping into user training.
A compact, simple and rugged PTT design
3M describes the FL7000 as a compact, rugged, non-powered design intended for demanding environments. Its technical datasheet gives an approximate housing size of 55 × 80 × 30 mm, excluding cables.[1]
The practical purchasing question is how that housing fits into the user's equipment. Evaluate attachment position, access with gloves, cable routing and clearance around other controls. Test it with the headset and radio carried where they will be used.
Keep the adapter's design separate from the power requirements of the whole communication system. Your headset, radios and other connected equipment still need their appropriate power arrangements.
5-pin versus 10-pin: identify the headset interface
The series offers 5-pin and 10-pin headset interfaces. The 10-pin interface enables power management from a radio or similar system.[2] For supported 10-pin models, 3M's instructions explain that power can pass from a compatible radio or intercom to the headset.[3]
| Headset interface | What it means for ordering | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| 5-pin | Select a version matching the headset downlead and required radio connection. | Complete headset model, plug and adapter part number. |
| 10-pin | Select a version matching the headset interface and supported power arrangement. | Headset compatibility and the radio/intercom's power support. |
Distinguish the headset-side pin count from the radio-side connector. For example, a listing that specifies a 5-pin headset interface and a 19-pin PRC-163 connection describes two different ends of the adapter.
All three FL705 products linked below use 5-pin headset interfaces. If you need a 10-pin setup, request a specifically confirmed 10-pin model rather than assuming a 5-pin version provides the same interface or power capability.
Two separate PTT buttons for transmit-path selection
The standard series configuration has two PTT buttons; 3M identifies the button arrangement as model dependent.[1] Include required control behavior in your order specifications.
During a sample evaluation, check whether users can identify the intended button by feel and operate it in the planned mounting position. Repeat the checks with normal gloves and equipment. Confirm both transmitted speech and received audio before approving the configuration.
Audio management: Mix versus Single
Select FL7000 models include an audio-management switch. The available settings change how radio audio is presented in the headset.[2]
| Setting | Audio presentation | Evaluation question |
|---|---|---|
| Mix | Radio communications are heard in both the left and right ear. | Does this presentation suit the user's listening workflow? |
| Single | Radio communications are separated between the left and right ears. | Can the user consistently recognize each path's audio? |
These definitions come from 3M's series brochure.[2] “Single” describes split-ear listening; it should not be read as a promise that the adapter selects only one active radio.
Confirm switch availability on the specific SKU. Test the listening arrangement with the intended headset, then document your team's selected mode and path mapping.

| Adapter | Headset interface | Radio configuration | Ordering check |
|---|---|---|---|
| FL705-APX7000 | 5-pin | Hardwired Motorola APX7000 connection plus a jack for specified radios. | Confirm the second radio and detachable cable; 3M lists that cable separately. |
| FL705-152A-02 | 5-pin | Two AN/PRC-152A radios; First Source Wireless identifies 6-pin NATO radio connections. | Confirm both radio models and connector requirements. |
| FL705-163 | 5-pin | AN/PRC-163; First Source Wireless identifies a 19-pin radio connection. | Confirm the headset downlead and intended PRC-163 configuration. |
The radio-side connector details for the PRC-152A and PRC-163 listings are provided on their respective First Source Wireless product pages.[4][5] Include accessory part numbers in your request; a connector label alone does not establish complete compatibility.
Product lifetime: plan replacement from the manufacture date
3M recommends replacing the adapter within five years of manufacture. Storage, use, servicing and maintenance influence its useful life. Inspect it regularly; cracks, deformation, loose or missing parts, and reduced performance can indicate earlier end of life.[3]
For fleet planning, record manufacture dates alongside issue dates and inspection results. Base the replacement schedule on the manufacture date, and flag equipment needing evaluation separately from items approved for issue.
Cleaning and maintenance
Clean with a cloth dampened with soap and warm water, and keep sockets clear of debris. Do not immerse the adapter for cleaning. It is designed to tolerate brief, shallow immersion, including saltwater, but must be dried afterward. Stainless-steel NEXUS connectors need additional care after saltwater exposure.[3]
Consult the 3M user instructions, Section 8, for the connector rinse, drying and silicone-treatment procedure. Use that procedure when training staff responsible for maintenance.
Storage before and after use
Store the adapter in a clean, dry area in its original packaging, away from direct heat, sunlight, dust and damaging chemicals.[3]
Assign a storage location with the applicable environmental limits from the user instructions. Keep maintenance records with fleet inventory so the next user can see the equipment's inspection status.
What to send for a compatibility review or quantity quote
- Exact radio models, number of radios per user and required communication paths.
- Headset model, downlead part number and connector photographs.
- Preferred FL7000 SKU, if already identified.
- Required audio-management switch and listening arrangement.
- Any radio-to-headset power requirement for a 10-pin configuration.
