3M PELTOR has announced a new headset in the Comtac series, the Comtac VII (8). With the latest release, comes new technical and design features that improve communications and comfort to its users. In this article, we’ll discuss what's new with the 3M PELTOR Comtac VIII.

Different Look
The Comtac 8 has a different look compared to its previous models. This comes with a redesigned headband, lower earcups, higher-mounted comms mic, and environmental microphones.
Redesigned Headband
The new low-profile headband is designed to reduce hot spots for better comfort when worn for long periods. It is also easier and faster to convert the headset to a helmet-mounted headset (ARC rails).
Updated Earcups
The Comtac VIII has updated its earcups to help provide greater sound attenuation. The cups are deeper giving you more space when wearing dual hearing protection such as earplugs.
New Boom Microphone Placement
The noise-canceling boom mic is mounted higher to the left cup. This new placement allows for better use for left-handed shooters so they don’t have to move the mic to the opposite earcup.
Better for Communicating in Loud Noise
The Comtac 8 has improvements that better help you communicate in loud noise. These features include soundscape and environmental listening modes.
Soundscape
Soundscape automatically increases radio and voice prompt volume when entering a high-noise environment.
Environmental listening modes
The Comtac 8 has the same environmental listening as the Comtac 6 including advanced and classic modes.
In the advanced mode, you can use the Mission Audio Profiles (MAP). If you’re unfamiliar with MAP function these include 5 modes that improve the way you communicate in different environments.

Observation: Maximum auditory awareness and sound detection in a quiet environment when the user is still.

Patrolling: For high situational awareness when walking in a low-noise environment. Limits sound such as footsteps on gravel, grass moving under feet, and equipment on body.

Conversation: Intended for close approximate open ear listening and sound localization.

Comfort: For comfort in noisy environments. Intended for use in periods of loud noise produced by tactical vehicles or airplanes.

Ambient Listening Off: Maximum sound reduction when operating in high noise and monitoring a radio.
Classic Mode: Allows you to adjust the volume in five steps by increasing or decreasing the sound level of the ambient/environmental listening.
Failsafe Communications
The headset is powered by 2 AA batteries. If in the case the batteries fail, the headset does not rely on headset power to receive or transmit via an externally connected radio. This means you can still communicate on your radio even if the batteries die.
Soundscape and environmental listening will not be available in the event batteries fail.
Earplug Mode
When using the headset with earplugs for dual hearing protection, the Earplug Mode, boosts environmental listening, comms volume, and voice prompts to compensate for the additional attenuation. This is intended for use ONLY when wearing earplugs. This feature can also be found on other Comtac models.
