Cleaning your headset keeps them in great condition, for longer. Often headsets are shared between team members, so it’s recommended they be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
In this article, we’ll explain the quick and easy steps for cleaning and disinfecting your headset.
Cleaning
When headsets are used every day especially outdoors, there’s no denying they get dirty. Here are a few simple steps on how to clean your headset, followed by some Do’s and Don’ts you should know before starting.
- Dampen a soft cloth with a mild soap (like Dawn) and water solution. We recommend mixing 1 teaspoon of liquid soap per 1 cup of water. Do not pour or spray the solution directly onto the headset.
- If your headset comes with a foam windscreen (usually on the end of a boom microphone), if possible, remove the foam windscreen before cleaning. We’ve included cleaning steps for the windscreen below.
- Gently wipe down the headset paying particular attention to visible dirt or built up being extra careful around battery compartments and microphones.
- Once finished, dry the headset with a clean dry cloth.
Don’t
- Do not completely submerge the headset into water
- Don’t use bleach or any heavy cleaning solutions as this can damage the headset
- Do not use a soaking wet cloth. Always ring the cloth of any excess water before using.
- Do not leave the headset on while cleaning
Do’s
- Turn the headset off when cleaning. To be safe, you can remove the battery from the headset, if applicable.
- Pay special attention to electronics, battery compartments, screens, and anything that can be easily damaged if wet.
- Use a damp microfiber cloth
Cleaning Windscreens
We do not recommend multiple users sharing microphone windscreens. Especially during cold and flu season, each person should have and use their windscreen and be changed out before every use.
Don’t use an alcohol-based solution on windscreens as this can shorten their lifespan. To clean, remove it from the headset, and wash it with mild soap and water solution. Squeeze out any excess water and moisture and leave out to dry completely.
Disinfecting
During cold and flu season, it’s important to limit the spread of germs. With many headsets being shared amongst teams, we recommend disinfecting the headset after each use or when being used by another person.
Disinfecting only takes a few minutes and kills about 99% of bacteria and germs that can linger on your headset.
- Using a disinfecting wipe like Clorox or a cloth that’s been sprayed with a disinfecting solution, gently wipe down the headset. Most household disinfectants are effective, but we recommend reading the directions on the product first. Don’t spray a disinfectant directly on the headset.
- After disinfecting the headset, use a clean damp wet cloth and wipe down the headset to remove any excess residue.
